_In
1995, Paco Cao deposited his body as a work of art in the Museum of Fine Arts
of Asturias, Oviedo, Spain. Artistic institutions seeking to obtain this work on
loan had to follow all the bureaucratic and technical procedures involved with
transporting and exhibiting this work of art. The biggest challenge was
transporting a human being as a work of art without using a passport. Border is
a four-part project. The first
part consists of the the deposit of the body at the museum of Fine Arts of Asturias. The second part consists of the paperwork involved in loaning and transporting the body as
a work of art. The third part is
the actual transport and exhibition of the work of art. The fourth part is the
presentation or publication of documents of parts one, two, and three in exhibitions,
books or catalogues . The body continues to be part of the Museo de Bellas Artes
de Asturias’ collection and available
for loan.
To date, the work has been solicited as a loan for a not-for-profit organization in Sweden —as part of the public art project Public Safety, Hammarö Kommun, Skoghal— as well as for a Contemporary Art Center --CGAC, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.
